After participating in this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Articulate the importance of early integration of palliative care into cancer treatment plans
  • Describe current efforts in measuring quality in palliative care
  • Communicate more effectively with patients and families regarding financial issues of palliative care
  • Outline current understanding of the  pathophysiology of and evidence-based management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy
  • Discuss the latest understanding of the pathways involved in chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV)  and the need  for early management of CINV
  • Summarize the series of biological events that result in mucositis and the agents targeted at these pathways
  • Discuss the integration of evidence-based management of cancer pain into clinical practice
  • Outline therapies of proven effectiveness to manage dyspnea in palliative care
  • Summarize the latest evidence on pathophysiology and management of chemotherapy related cognitive dysfunction
  • Describe the unique management issues for patients experiencing comorbidities with cancer
